Second Act Productions was set up by Andrew O’Connor and Paul Sandler in 2015 and is led by Executive Producer Lee Hupfield.
Second Act is part of Cat’s on the Roof Media and is an ITV Studios company.
Andrew O'Connor, C.E.O.
Andrew O'Connor's credits as a creator, Producer & Executive Producer include PEEP SHOW, THE CUBE, THE REAL HUSTLE and all of DERREN BROWN'S TV and stage shows. Andrew founded and then ran OBJECTIVE PRODUCTIONS until 2014.
His programmes have been nominated for over 100 British and international awards and have won RTS AWARDS, GOLDEN ROSES, BRITISH COMEDY AWARDS and BAFTAS. He is also the recipient of TWO OLIVIER AWARDS and a NY THEATRE GUILD DRAMA DESK AWARD.
He the CEO of the Cat’s on the Roof Media group of companies, including Second Act.
Paul Sandler, C.O.O.
Paul became the C.O.O. of the Cat’s on the Roof Media Group in 2015, running three Production Companies – Gameface Productions, Second Act Productions and Crook Productions, all in collaboration with ITV. He is also involved in the management of Derren Brown’s Production Company, Vaudeville Productions.
From 2014 to 2016 Paul was Executive Chair of Eleven Film.
From January 2005 to June 2015 he was Managing Director of Objective Productions. In 2007 he oversaw the sale of the company to All3 Media and then continued to run Objective as a stand-alone company within the group.
From 2001 to 2004 Paul worked as an independent consultant concentrating on production and business growth. His clients included Channel 4, Betty TV, At It Productions and Objective.
In the 90’s he was Head of Production at 24 Hour Productions and Production Director when the company became Planet 24. The company was sold to
Carlton Television in 1999. Paul also ran two other Planet companies and held a non-executive position on the board of Leaside Regeneration Ltd, co-ordinating work to regenerate East London and the Lea Valley.
In the 80’s Paul was a runner, a Production Manager, an Assistant Director and a Producer on pop videos, music longforms and feature films.
Before that he just watched a lot of television.
Lee Hupfield, Executive Producer / Director
Lee Hupfield is a producer, director and writer from Birmingham.
After winning the RTS student 'director of the year' for two years running while at university Lee left to produce THE BIG BREAKFAST with JOHNNY & DENISE. Lee then helped set up and a produce the first two series of BIG BROTHER and CELEBRITY BIG BROTHER.
He has also been behind award winning shows such as BANZAI, THE FRIDAY NIGHT PROJECT, BALLS OF STEEL and JOHN BISHOPS BRITAIN. He also wrote and created award winning scripted series STAR STORIES, THE KEVIN BISHOP SHOW, MEET THE PARENTS and the Bafta winning IT WAS ALRIGHT IN THE 70's.
Whilst in the USA he exec produced TOAST OF LONDON and produced the Emmy award winning BETTY WHITE's OFF THEIR ROCKERS.
Jonathan Rees, Finance Director
Jonathan joined Second Act as Finance Director when the company was first established.
Jonathan’s background in the television industry encompasses both commissioning and production. Starting as a trainee in BBC News & Current Affairs he moved to ITN budgeting its Gulf war coverage whilst making a nightly appearance over John Suchet’s left shoulder (SPOILER: it’s the finance department not a newsroom!).
He supported the commissioning team at ITV’s Network Centre for five years before going on to head up the finance department for the newly formed ITV plc. For the past 10 years Jonathan has worked for some of the UK’s largest production groups including Warner Bros TV UK Productions and Endemol Shine.
Jonathan is a proud Welshman despite his complete inability to sing or play rugby.
Ruth Emerson, Director of Production
Ruth has been with Second Act since it started up in 2016 and oversees the management of all production output and the day to day running of the company.
Ruth started in TV production as a Gallery PA before moving into Production Management and has worked on a diverse range of programming from Challenge Anneka to Don’t Forget Your Toothbrush to Armstrong & Miller.
She worked as Head of Production for At It Productions when they started up and after 2 years there moved over to Channel 4 in 2001 as a PFM within the Entertainment, T4 & Music department. Prior to joining Second Act she worked at Objective Productions between 2008 – 2015 as a Production Executive overseeing the Entertainment Department.
